Koryaksky volcano decorates landscapes in the district of the regional center, it can be seen from anywhere in the regions of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yelizovo and Vilyuchinsk. This is the highest volcano in the southern part of Kamchatka, its absolute height is 3,456 meters above sea level. Koryaksky volcano is located in the neighborhood of Avachinsky in 35 km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and heads the Avacha group of volcanoes.
The volcano is a ribbed cone of regular shape with a top cut to the west, is active, but did not exhibit high activity in historical time. The last eruption began in December of 2008 and was an outbreak of ashes. From the western slope of the volcano an ashes trace stretched, which periodically faded and then intensified. This eruption lasted almost to the end of 2009.
